So, when is the actual Apple Watch Series 6 release date? Apple held its first Time Flies virtual event last week on September 15, 2020. During the event, the company introduced two brand new smartwatches – Apple Watch Series 6 2020 and Apple Watch SE 2020, alongside the iPad Air 4, WatchOS 7, iOS 14, and iPadOS 14. These watches run the new WatchOS 7, although the Series SE sacrifices multiple features for the price. So, keep reading to learn how these two new devices stack up against each other.

Part 1. Similarities

Just as expected, the Apple Watch SE and Apple Watch Series 6 features are quite similar. They both have a similar design, optical heart sensor, and are water-resistant. However, there are some glaring differences that you must know before preordering. For example, the Apple Watch Series 6 goes a notch higher with the blood oxygen sensor and a powerful S6 processor.

Similarities:

  • WatchOS 7
  • 32GB capacity
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5.0 connectivity
  • GP5 + Cellular models
  • 50m water resistance
  • Heart rate monitor and notifications
  • W3 wireless chip
  • 64-bit dual-core processor
  • Always-on altimeter
  • 18-hour battery life
  • Noise monitoring app
  • 1000-nit Retina LTPO OLED display
  • 40/44mm case size

Differences:

  • Apple Watch 6: blood oxygen sensor and second-gen optical heart sensor
  • Apple Watch 6: ECG app
  • Apple Watch 6: UI ultra-wideband chip
  • Apple Watch 6: S6 dual-core processor
  • Apple Watch S6: Blue and Red additional colors
  • Apple Watch S6: Always-on Retina Display
  • Apple Watch SE: S5 dual-core processor
  • Apple Watch SE: Retina display
  • Apple Watch SE: Second-gen optical sensor only

Part 2. Series 6 vs SE: Design & Display

Firstly, both watches share the same looks and 1000-nit Retina LTPO OLED display. Now that's even brighter than the popular iPad Pro, which has 600 nits on its Liquid Retina display. Another similarity is that they are all 50m water-resistant. Therefore, you can carry them along to your swimming sessions. Not to mention that these new watches are compatible with Apple's two brand new bands – Braided and Solo loops.

However, the Series 6 offers an Always-On display borrowed from its predecessor, the Series 5. This means that your watch's display is always on, allowing you to manipulate the screen without raising or twisting your hands.

Part 3. Series 6 vs SE: Color & Material

Like always, both of these smartwatches are available in Space Gray, Gold, and Silver colors. The Series 6, however, brings to the table the new (PRODUCT) RED and Blue hues on top of the Gold, Space Gray, and Silver colors.

Color matters aside, the Watch Series 6 will be available in either Titanium, Aluminum, or Stainless Steel materials. The Titanium and Stainless Steel watches come with the sapphire crystal screen, while the aluminum watches use the Ion-x glass. Sadly, the Watch SE only comes in Aluminum construction.

Part 4. Series 6 vs SE: Software

When it comes to the software, both watches run the new WatchOS 7. Compared to its predecessor, the WatchOS 6, this new Apple Watch operating system comes with a ton of advanced features. For instance, you'll get better calorie counting and new workout types like Functional Strength Training, Cooldown, Dance, and Core Training. Also, you'll get an automatic handwashing detection feature to help you clean your hands with a 20-second timer. And lest I forget the updated Maps app with cycling directions.

But the Apple Watch Series becomes the better watch, thanks to the blood oxygen sensor app. It is the first Apple Watch model to bring this advanced health monitoring feature. With this feature, you can better understand your overall wellbeing and oxygen levels. It can determine blood oxygen levels between 70% and 100%. So, if your blood levels dip to their 70s, you might have a respiratory condition.

Part 5: Series 6 vs SE: Hardware & Performance

This is another area where the glaring differences come to the fore. Whereas the Series 6 comes with the new S6 processor, the SE, on the other hand, inherits the Series 5's S5 dual-core processor. Don't get it wrong, though, because the S5 is still incredibly fast. However, there's no denying that the S6 is a more refined processor.

Hardware differences aside, both models retain the typical 18-hour all-day battery life. The Series 6, however, provides a faster charging, which is down to the powerful S6 processor. It can complete a full charge in less than 1.5 hours and offers extended battery life for specific workouts like outdoor and indoor runs. So, even though the Series 6 tops here, the significance is not big enough to favor it over the SE.

Part 6. Series 6 vs SE: Price

It's important to note, firstly, that the smartwatches are available in Wi-Fi and cellular-only variants. Also, shipping will start from September 18, 2020. That said, the Apple Watch Series 6 price tag will begin at $399, while the Apple Watch SE price tag will start at $279.

The Summing Up

It's evident that the Apple Watch Series 6 bosses the Apple Watch SE in almost all departments, bar the price. Buying the SE will save you a couple of bucks, but you'll miss out on multiple exciting features like the blood oxygen app, always-on display, and the top-class S6 processor. Therefore, spending a few dollars more on the S6 is the smarter option.
